Contaminated Sediment Remediation Projects

Project

Overview

Services Provided

Conner Creek Remediation

Infrastructure Alternatives dredged about 180,000 cubic yards of PCB contaminated sediment and natural clay bottom from Conner Creek to provide hydraulic capacity for a new Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) facility.

  • Hydraulic dredging contractor
  • Mechanical dredging contractor
  • Debris removal from the creek bed
  • Hydrographic surveying
  • Geotube® dewatering contractor

Black River Remediation

Infrastructure Alternatives dredged 25,000 cubic yards of PCB and metals contaminated sediment from the Black River, dewatered the dredged material in Geotube® containers, and treated the released water in an on-site temporary treatment plant prior to discharge back into the Black River.

  • Hydraulic dredging contractor
  • Geotube® contractor
  • Water treatment contractor

Ashtabula River Remediation

The Ashtabula River Remediation project removed 640,000 cubic yards of PCB contaminated sediment from the Ashtabula River.  The dredged sediment was dewatered in geotextile tubes, stacked to 10 layers high in a TSCA permitted containment facility.

  • Geotextile tube contractor
  • PCBs contaminated sediment dewatering
  • Dredged material header design and construction
  • Water treatment contractor

In the first year of this multi-year remediation project, a pilot study was conducted to establish the best operating practices for the project.  Under the conditions of full scale production, about 25,000 cubic yards of PCB contaminated sediment was dredged from Little Lake Butte des Morts (Operable Unit 1) and dewatered in Geotube® containers.

  • Geotube® contractor
  • PCBs contaminated sediment dewatering
  • Dredged material header design and construction
  • Chemical conditioning system operation
  • Water treatment contractor

Maintenance Dredging Projects

Project

Overview

Services Provided

Fond du Lac Maintenance Dredging

Sixteen thousand cubic yards of soft sediment and natural clay bottom were removed from the Fond du Lac River and marina to increase the navigable depth in this maintenance dredging project.  The dredge spoils were dewatered in Geotube® containers in a nearby parking lot.

  • General contractor
  • Maintenance dredging
  • Geotube® contractor

IMTT Chemical Storm Water Pond Dredging

Infrastructure Alternatives dredged about 4,600 cubic yards of sediment from a storm water retention basin, while keeping the basin in service.

  • Maintenance dredging contractor
  • Geotube® contractor

Wastewater Lagoon Dredging Projects

Project

Overview

Services Provided

ConAgra Lagoon Dredging & Sludge Dewatering

Sludge (13,500 cubic yards total volume) was dredged from three industrial wastewater treatment lagoons with an 8 inch diameter horizontal auger dredge.  The dredged sludge was dewatered using a trailer mounted belt filter press and then hauled to a local landfill for disposal.

  • General contractor
  • Hydraulic dredging contractor
  • Belt filter press dewatering contractor

An 8 inch diameter horizontal auger dredge was used to remove 18,000 cubic yards of wastewater sludge from two industrial wastewater treatment ponds.  The dredged sludge was dewatered in Geotube® containers.

  • Hydraulic dredging contractor
  • Geotube® contractor
  • Geotube® dewatering of wastewater sludge

Homer Wastewater Lagoon Dredging

Wastewater sludge (biosolids) was removed from the Village of Homer’s municipal wastewater treatment lagoon using an 8 inch diameter horizontal auger dredge.  About 22,500 cubic yards were dredged from the lagoon and dewatered in Geotube® containers during the course of the project.

  • Hydraulic dredging contractor
  • Geotube® contractor
  • Geotube® dewatering of wastewater sludge

Kawashima Lagoon Dredging

Infrastructure Alternatives used an 8 inch diameter horizontal auger dredge to remove about 4,000 cubic yards of industrial sludge from the Kawashima Textiles wastewater treatment lagoon.  The sludge was dewatered on site in Geotube® containers, and then hauled to a local landfill for final disposal.

  • Hydraulic dredging contractor
  • Geotube® contractor
  • Geotube® dewatering of wastewater sludge

Kimberly Clark Lagoon Dredging

Sludge was dredged from the wastewater treatment lagoon at this paper mill using a horizontal auger dredge.  The dredged sludge was dewatered in Geotube® containers and then later hauled to a local landfill for final disposal.

  • Hydraulic dredging contractor
  • Geotube® contractor
  • Geotube® dewatering of wastewater sludge

NewPage Paper Mill Geotube® Pilot Study

Infrastructure Alternatives conducted a pilot study for this paper mill which involved hydraulically dredging sludge from a wastewater treatment lagoon, then chemically conditioning and dewatering the sludge in Geotube® containers.

  • Hydraulic dredging contractor
  • Geotube® contractor
  • Geotube® dewatering of wastewater sludge

Wetland Remediation Projects

Project

Overview

Services Provided

Lake Sinissippi Wetland Rehabilitation

Infrastructure Alternatives was contracted to increase the navigable depth of the lake by dredging.  The dredged sediment was used to fill Geotube® containers which were deployed across the mouth of a small bay.  The filled Geotube® containers created a breakwater, protecting a wetlands area from an invasive fish species that had threatened to destroy it.

  • Hydraulic dredging contractor
  • Geotube® contractor
  • Erosion control contractor
  • Marine Geotube® structure construction
